Cedar Rapids And Marion City To Have New Design Standards For Garages

City planners in Cedar Rapids and Marion are proposing new design standards for garages. Homebuilders will construct 'Snout Houses' that seem more home and less garage.
The proposals started with the thought that garages should not extend as close to the street as the living area of the house.
Particularly, the snout house is house in which two-stall or three-stall garages extend well in front of the houses, creating divisions that seem more like rows of garages than homes.
"A lot of the development starts looking the same over a time. And it has led to some neighborhoods looking like garages. We're looking to execute new design standards." says Tom Treharne, director of planning and development for Marion city.
